How the World of the Haven Chronicles Has Grown from Haven Wakes to Book Four

Every fantasy series begins with a small corner of a much larger world. At the start of Haven Wakes, Steve’s life is firmly rooted in the high tech city of Caercester. The rules of his world are stable, understandable, and largely free of the strange forces that shape fantasy stories.
But the Haven Chronicles series was never meant to be confined to one city or one understanding of reality. From the hidden magical community of Darkacre to the further afield journeys of Magic Bound and Haven’s Deceit, the world contained in the series has steadily expanded, revealing new layers of magic, history, and danger.
With Book Four almost finished, I thought it was time to look back over how the world of the Haven Chronicles has grown since we first met Steve.
Where it all began: Steve’s limited world

In Haven Wakes, Steve’s world feels big to him but it’s actually only a small part of a much larger reality.
He knows all about Caercester (or so he thinks) with its robots, holograms, and polished architecture. His life is shaped by school, home, and the expectations of the grown-ups in his life. If magic exists for Steve, it’s simply something mentioned in stories. His limited viewpoint grounds us in a world that feels familiar, reflecting Steve’s sheltered understanding.
And then…
Our first glimpse of magic: Darkacre

Everything changes when Steve wakes up in Hartley Keg’s shop in Darkacre.
Think of Darkacre as the first rip in the fabric of the world Steve knows. Darkacre is a hidden magical community full of colour, enchantment, and characters who defy the rules he’s grown up with. It’s not the clean, polished existence he’s used to. Darkacre is a little cramped, a little chipped around the edges, but incredibly fun. And it hints at a wider magical world that has survived in the shadows for centuries.
This is the moment that the Haven Chronicles shifts from sci fi to fantasy with a high tech twist.
A widening world view: Magic Bound and Haven’s Deceit
With the adventure in Caercester over by the end of Haven Wakes, books two and three in the series, Magic Bound and Haven’s Deceit, take Steve to all kinds of new places.
Magic Bound
To help his friends, Steve is forced to travel beyond the city limits of Caercester, to other parts of the UK. He discovers that Darkacre isn’t the only magical community, far from it. The workaday world of non magical humans grows too. We learn more about the technology used there, including of course robots, and how people live in other regions.
Haven’s Deceit
While we start back in Darkacre and Caercester, Steve’s decision to find his missing parents has him and his friends on the move again. This time, they’re leaving the UK and heading to Europe. We discover more about the powers that be, both magical, workaday, and covert. There are mysteries to solve, new skills to learn, and even greater peril. Steve’s world is more vast, more complicated, and more dangerous than he ever imagined.
Two worlds collide
One of the main elements that I love about the Haven Chronicles is the interplay between magic and technology. At the start of Haven Wakes, these two realities seem completely separate. Steve lives in a society shaped by advanced technology and scientific logic. Magic appears distant, mysterious, and beyond belief. But as the story unfolds, these boundaries begin to blur.
With each book, we see more and more how these two communities overlap, influence each other, and sometimes clash. Hidden histories start to surface, completely rewriting Steve’s understanding of his world and himself. The further his travels take him, the harder it becomes to keep technology and magic in separate boxes.
By Book Four, the series is no longer about discovering new places. It’s about understanding how the magical and workaday communities fit together and what happens when they don’t.
Further afield and heading home: Book Four
Without giving away any spoilers, Book Four is where Steve’s world explodes! Not literally, but he finds out so much more and travels further than he ever has before. He discovers:
- places he didn’t know existed in his world
- places he’d only ever heard about or seen on the news
- the possibility of places beyond… Nope, that would be too much of a spoiler.
The geography of his world widens, the lore becomes more complicated, and the connections between past and present zoom into focus.
And yet, there’s also a sense of coming home. Book Four brings Steve full circle back to Darkacre, Caercester, and familiar faces. But Steve isn’t the same person who left home to find his parents. He’s grown just as much as his world has.
*
Worldbuilding isn’t just about creating places. It’s about letting those places evolve as the story unfolds. The Haven Chronicles began with a boy who was confident that he understood his own world. Four books later, that world has grown in geography, history, and culture. And with it, Steve’s understanding of that world has expanded too.
What I’ve loved most about writing this series is watching Steve grow into this ever unfolding world, with all of its different realities. Each new place, each new challenge, and each new truth has shaped him into someone braver, wiser, and more connected to both the magical and high tech worlds. As Book Four draws to a close, I’m excited for you to see just how far he’s come, and how much further he still has to go.
